Frequently Asked Questions
How is HMS Different from Other Schools?
Our school does not expect students to fit into a "box" - we follow the child, allowing their natural curiosity and aptitudes to guide us in giving them the best education that is tailored to their own individual needs. Art, music, nature and life skills are inherent in our program. We see our school as a community, where mutual respect, cooperation, challenge, responsibility, creativity and individuality are honoured and encouraged.
Where are you located?
Our school is located at Brethren in Christ Church, 1152 6th Concession North, on the 6th line of Clearview, north of Hwy 91, centrally located from Collingwood, Stayner and Creemore. Though we are located in a church currently, our school is non-denominational and has no religious affiliations.
What schedules are available?
We offer full-time (5 days per week), an alternate day program (A and B) for casa students only. We recommend that 5 year olds attend full time to get the most benefit from 3rd year casa. We also recommend registering early as space fills up quickly. Drop off is between 8:45 and 8:55, and pick up is between 3:15 and 3:30.
Do you have extracurricular activities?
We have after school enrichment programs in the spring and fall, in arts, music, languages and sports, from 3:45-4:45 pm which are open to community students. These classes are in addition to our academic art, music and phys ed programs.
Are you a licensed facility?
Yes. We are licensed under the Ontario Ministry of Education as a private school. We are affiliated with the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools, and the Canadian Association of Montessori Teachers.
Do you provide lunches and snacks?
Children bring a litter-free lunch daily. A morning and an afternoon snack for casa students is provided. We also have hot lunches you can order throughout the year.
Are your teachers accredited?
Yes. Our teachers have post-secondary degrees as well as Montessori certification in either casa, elementary, or both. Some of our teachers are also certified by the Ontario College of Teachers. Each teacher has CPR and first aid training, as well as Screening for the Vulnerable Sector.
What is the student/teacher ratio?
We have a ratio of 8 students for every casa teacher, and 15 to 1 ratio for elementary.
